May Studio

Summertime is here! You can feel it here in the winds (or lack thereof) and the warming sea; I hear reports that the gardens are getting sown up in WV. This past month, my friend Eric came down from Boston to STJ for the first time and had a good dose of island medicine to cure the winter blues. My dad also came down a week ago to hang out for the weekend. We did all the great "Dad" stuff: worked on my car, took hikes, drank beer and stared into space. It was awesome! My nephew and sister-in-law are due down in a few weeks to also get their first taste of STJ. I moved to a new apartment three weeks ago, too...I'm thinking I might throw a few air mattresses on the porch and start renting out weekly. Joking aside, it's wonderful to be reminded of how important it is to enjoy our relationships and take time to nurture them. Thanks for continuing to read the words I throw at you in my newsletters...feel free to throw words back anytime.

What's It worth?

When an opportunity arises in your life--for a new client, project, career, car, relationship, etc.—how do you decide whether to go for it or not? Do you consider the time involved, the money, the prestige, the emotions? Obviously what you use to weigh the options is based on your personal values and goals. You look for opportunities that you think will payoff what you want. But how do you decide if the payoffs will outweigh the costs involved in getting it?

We’re constantly making choices based upon what its worth—the costs involved in getting the results we want. In our jobs, relationships, workouts, purchases…if it costs too much time, energy, money or heartache, we let it go. But wagering that the payoffs will be greater than the costs is where all the fun comes in. How do you know when to make the leap and go for it? And if you’re not really sure, do you do it anyway so you’re not left wondering what would happen if you had? That’s where it comes down to one’s personal values…do you value the thrill of the leap when you don’t know how far it is to the bottom? Or do you prefer having the certainty so you don’t get caught off guard?

Moving to St. John several years ago was one of my leaps, not knowing where I was really going—only knowing that it was somewhere I could wake up to the ocean and also start from scratch. The only thing I did know was that if I didn’t do it, I would be tortured wondering about it forever. There was no other option, in my mind. But that’s because I know I live for pushing my life into the creases of the unknown. That’s when I think on my feet. For others, that would be too stressful; staying with what’s comfortable would be what allows them to think on their feet. We know our own limitations, and if we’re lucky, we know what also drives our spirit. Every day we have opportunities and decisions to make. Obviously family, bills and other obligations influence many of our choices. But for those big opportunities/decisions in life, the magic—and the mastery--comes when we make those decisions from the soul. It’s when we don’t, when we make decisions based on guilt, greed, lack of confidence or whatever, that’s when we get frustration, resentment and discontentment in return. Only you know what something is worth to you, whether the costs outweigh the results. When you know what it’s worth, the key is believing in yourself enough to make the leap.
