Auction Benefit

Just came from my first silent/live auction benefit dinner for the local private school here. A night of fancy dresses, tasteful jewels, neat jackets and plastered smiles. It actually felt more genuinely friendly and cheerful than I imagined, which was refreshing. Leave it to St. John to pull off a high-end event with character and authenticity. Vacations, paintings and jewelry were auctioned; even 2 iPhones and a Mac Air were among the silent auction items. And some of the outfits were really lovely! Where do these women shop? It can't be from around here. Our one mall on the other island doesn't have that much of a selection! Thousands of dollars were raised this evening, which was wonderful for the school. Every 10 minutes or so a $500 bottle of champagne was auctioned, too. I never imagined I'd move from the country to an island and need a cocktail dress.
